January Cure 2016 – Assignment 13

Lighten Up the Living Room

The idea here is to lose the extraneous things that might have started to clutter up the surfaces in the room that you perhaps just aren’t noticing anymore. Please note that I’m not just talking about actual clutter (although certainly that is part of this too!). This exercise is also about cycling out some perfectly good decorative things, temporarily. Pretend you are putting your home on the market for sale and have been asked to strip out anything super personal or “lived in” looking. Depending on your level of natural maximalism, I’d say to aim for removing 3-15 things from the space. Move them to a temporary storage spot from which you can easily retrieve them later, after giving them a bit of a break. Now, you are going to just live with it for a bit, as is. Let yourself really “see” the space for awhile in this simplified version of itself. Before the end of the Cure, we’ll revisit this, but for now, your job is just to be tough and pull the stuff.

Heh. So back when we did the floors, we cleared our living room out. That was what…two months ago? We still haven’t brought everything back in. We’ve been in living room limbo, because I wanted to buy a sectional from IKEA and build out a bunch of shelves along one wall. There’s no point in pulling everything back out when all of that will theoretically be happening in the next few months. We did rearrange the living room a smidge Monday night, though! We kind of pulled everything in to cozy up the “living room” area, which also opened up a pretty good work space for me to bring in my desk that’s been sitting in the garage for 3+ years. I can finally finish sanding/refinishing it and use it again!! I’m going to turn it into my mini crafting area in the bedroom. Most importantly, it will hold my sewing machine that I have to learn how to use, so I can start making stuff for the nursery!!!

By Tuesday we’d kind of admitted that the IKEA sectional is a bit of a dream that may not come true before LBW arrives, so we should probably look into cheaper alternatives. And then I bought a couple of covers from Zulily. Which may be outrageously bright and gaudy. We’ll have to wait and see. Considering how long it takes Zulily to ship…LBW may be here by then. ;) Oh, and I bought this adorable desk:

Anyway, it wasn’t until Wednesday evening that I’d gotten the room clean enough to want to photograph it. So here we are.
