AT Style Cure #8: What is Your Room Missing?

One of my favorite blogs is Apartment Therapy. For the month of November they’re doing a Style Cure room makeover challenge to help you prepare for the holidays. I’m going to makeover our bedroom – while it’s not really a room that will get a lot of visibility from guests I think having a “safe” place to come back to for family overload recovery will be very beneficial. :)

#8: Pick One Project to Help Fill in What Your Room is Missing.

For today, just think about what your room seems to be lacking in terms of visual depth (examples: an accent color, varied texture, more light, a dose of bold pattern) and/or what it really needs to be more comfortable (examples: curtains you can close at night, a standing lamp to read by, a place to store the magazines, cushy pillows for napping on the sofa). The goal is to come up with a decor item or project that will attempt to fulfill some of these needs and therefore make the room feel more complete.

For now, don’t worry about the exact details or specifics of products or DIY projects, just decide on ONE of the room’s needs that you’d like to try address and what you think might best remedy it.

Looking back over my pictures from this weekend, I’m going to say color. It’s white on white on white on beige and that’s just boring. I’ve posted those pictures on Facebook and everyone LOVES the dresser. Considering it’s the only color in a sea of bland, that’s not surprising!! Ugh – the more I look at those pictures the more bummed out I get. :( And I was so happy this weekend to have a clean room! Of course, without the cleaning we wouldn’t be able to do anything else to improve the room, so I guess that was an important first step.

Things needed for improvement (I know they said not to get too specific, but I can’t help it!):

  • wood tones!
    • the bed needs to be finished
    • the desk needs to be sanded/stained
    • the nightstands need to be made
    • the dog condo needs to be made
  • blues!
    • the dresser needs to be painted
    • the starburst ombre needs to be painted
    • the curtains need to be purchased/made and hung up
  • yellow!
    • the stripe along the ceiling needs to be sorted
    • ??? I’m not sure how else to bring yellow into the room, other than bed linens.
  • gray!
    • ??? I know I want to incorporate gray, but I don’t have any definite plans yet.

Pick Your Paint Color

I didn’t include this with the main header, because I’ve already picked colors. But!!! I just discovered something HORRIBLE. You know the emerald I’ve been bragging about?? And how I mentioned that it looked more green than I thought?? Well.

Well, well, well…

I found my old Facebook album and…the original color was NOT emerald. It was “pool green” which, as far as I can tell, only exists at Lowe’s. You can’t even find it on the Pantone website!! I bet a gallon of the pool green would be cheaper than the emerald was, too. Gah – I’m so upset!! I bought a gallon of emerald so I could paint the closet and use the rest to finish the dresser. I’ve already opened and it, so I can’t return it. I’m not sure they let you return special paint like that, anyway. It’s just…frustrating. I really don’t want to spend more money on paint, but the emerald is definitely more green than I want in the bedroom (it’s looking fine in the closet, for the record).

  1. Maybe they will tint it for you? I don’t think they let you return special colors but I had a similar situation this summer and the guy kept adding “two drops black, one blah blah, one blah blah” until it matched.

Your to-do list sounds really busy! I’ve thought about repainting the room I’m working on but its a guest room and I just don’t feel like putting that kind of work into it LOL

    • That may be worth looking into, but I’ll just wait and see how much I have left over by the time I’m done with my closet. I really need to get back into that, too, but I have to buy those plastic covers for our paint tray first. Laziness strikes again!!

I’m definitely not getting all that done in time for the Style Cure – considering it’s been nearly a year since we started this and I still don’t have the walls painted… We aren’t very good at finishing projects. lol! I haaaaaate painting.

Tell me how you REALLY feel:
