AT January Cure #5: Focus

10 Minute Mini Meditation & Pick a Project

Do a Mini-Meditation

Find a spot in your home that you rarely (maybe never!) sit in that gives you a view on a room or area that you feel is especially problematic. Take a seat on a chair (or the floor) and just observe for ten minutes. Turn off TV, radio, music and your phone – this is a quiet exercise and is most effective with focus and concentration.

  1. Look around the room and try to imagine what it would look like empty. Recall what it was like when you moved in.
  2. Once you have done that, focus on whatever part of the room that you feel is the most problematic and imagine removing the “stuff” from that area – furniture, belongings, everything. Now, start rebuilding that area, adding back in only what feels right and looks good in your minds eye.
  3. Make note of what changes you envision and move forward with some additional clarity about how you truly want your home to be; what you need and what you can move forward without.

Repeat as needed in different rooms of your home as you move forward – no need to overdo it tonight, but consider doing this exercise again at any time throughout the Cure process when you are unsure of what to do next to help improve a room, what you might want to add to your outbox or what needs cleaning and repair.

I kind of did this recently with our living room. Twice! We cleared it all out right before Christmas to clean the carpets (that are now just as gross as before, thanks doggies!) and did it again to a lesser extent after Christmas when we were taking the decorations down. I think we finally have the furniture configured in the best way to really open the space up. I still have a lot I want to change…but it all costs $$$ so it’s about as good as it’s going to get right now.

And I just did it last night while thinking about updating our spare bedroom. It was much easier then because that room is currently devoid of furniture. Huzzah! I’m going to call this one done and move on. :)

Review your list and choose a project to complete this month.

Choose one that fits the below criteria:

  • A project that can be completed this month, in a few hours.
  • A project that will make a noticeable difference.

I really want to commit to painting the stairs/upstairs landing…but that’s doubtful. I have other paint projects I need to finish first. Let me look over the schedule again… It looks like we’re only going to get one day to do this…and it’s a Wednesday?? Okay – my project is going to be painting! I’m GOING TO FINISH MY CLOSET. And I’m going to paint the trim upstairs!

  1. Finish Painting Closet
    • This will make a huge impact throughout the house. My clothes are spread out all over the world and are making our lives chaos. I can’t find anything to wear without wandering around for 5-10 minutes… It will be so nice to have a little bit of order again!
  2. Paint Trim
    • If you watched my expertly done home tour video, you will have seen the bizarre fail of a paint job that was done on the trim/doors in our upstairs hallway. It still amazes me that I didn’t notice that when we did our first visit…I probably would’ve asked the previous homeowner to fix it before we bought it. Are you allowed to do that? I think you are.

Tell me how you REALLY feel:
