AT January Cure #2: Plan Your Cure

Make a List of Projects

To get started, set aside an hour or so to do a walkthrough of your home and make notes on any trouble spots as you move through each room. It’s easiest to organize your list by room – you’ll want sections for all the important areas of your own home, i.e. the entryway, living room, bathroom, bedroom and kitchen. Start at the front door and do a thorough “inspection”, noting each area or item that needs a good cleaning, a de-cluttering or a re-organization.

Lord help us…do you have all day?! Thankfully I just did my video tour, so it’s pretty fresh on my mind. There are some major renovations I want do to, mainly in the living room and reading nook…but I’m going to ignore the big things in those rooms and focus on finishing the rooms we’ve already started on (bedroom, closet, half-bath) because that is plenty.

Living Room

  • front doorknob is straight busted and has been for months
  • shoe bucket needs to be sorted
  • coffee table is wrekt
    • needs to be cleaned off
    • I’d love to replace the insert with plexiglass
  • dust off the ceiling fan
  • convert the shelves into a standing desk

Kitchen / Dining Room

  • counters, table, island need to be cleaned off
  • clean out refrigerator and pantry
  • organize cleaning supplies under the sink
  • does grocery shopping count? lol!

Hallway / Half-Bath

  • make my macrame curtain thing
  • the hallway needs to be cleared out – including (especially) the closet
  • coats need to be hung in the closet
  • organize cleaning supplies in closet
  • replace the litter box
  • hang up the hand towel thingy
  • add shelves in the half-bath
  • replace air filter

Stairs / Landing

  • books on the stairs need to be taken to upstairs closet
  • walls need to be painted – maybe wait on living room?
  • trim definitely needs to be painted
  • replace air filter
Upstairs Bedrooms

  • sort through and clear out junk
  • move bed into back bedroom
  • maybe paint front bedroom/nursery?

Upstairs Bathroom

  • get new shower curtain, rugs?

Bonus Room (closet)

  • clear out all but books
  • build shelves
  • get chair, reading light, art, blanket…

Garage

  • clean up so it’s usable and not embarrassing
  • sorry, a bit vague because this is Mr. T’s domain

Master Bathroom / Closet

  • finish painting my closet
  • get the “flooring” in my closet
  • put all my clothes back in my closet
  • clean the bathroom
  • new shower curtain

Master Bedroom

  • put all the clothes away
  • paint dresser
  • sand/stain desk and get it out of the garage
  • paint flipping yellow stripe across the ceiling

When your tour is complete, grab a highlighter and select a few (3 – 5 is ideal) key areas from each room that you plan to focus on – the spots that will make the biggest impact on the look and use of the room as a whole when they are improved.

Now, write up your projects list, room by room, featuring the highlighted sections (remember, just 3-5 per room, maximum) from your observation notes as the main bullet points.

I guess my first list was already pretty condensed…not much changed between the two. But copy pasta is easy to make, so here it is again – slightly modified!

  • repair/replace the front doorknob
  • clean off the coffee table and replace insert with plexiglass
  • convert the shelves into a standing desk for the computer

  • organize cleaning supplies under the sink

  • hang hand towel

Stairs / Landing

  • clean off stairs
  • paint trim
  • paint walls

  • move “spare bedroom”
